How to Makeover a Room
You have finally decided to “makeover” a tired and worn room, but ask “where to start?” Often inspiration can begin right in the room itself. Is there a special piece of furniture or rug that you can’t bear to part with, or an architectural detail, such as a fireplace or a window, that you have always wanted to highlight? Any of these can be a jumping off point for your project.
From that point of inspiration you can choose your color palette and your basic style emphasis. Color and style are tricky, but not insurmountable.
Some key points to remember when choosing a color palette and style for your room are:
1. Be aware of the mood you want to reflect in the room. Relaxing environments may call for a more neutral palette with punches of rich color; vibrant primary colors inspire activity.
2. Do your homework. Consult a design specialist, paint samples onto your walls and see how the changes in light affect the color, coordinate fabrics, wall colors, and wood tones to achieve the look and feel you want.
3. Don’t be afraid to use color for an accent. If you love red, but feel that a little goes a long way then use it as an accent with a neutral palette. Paint an accent wall, use it in throw pillows, or add a vibrant piece of art or an accessory.
Whether you consider your taste to be traditional, contemporary or eclectic, don’t be afraid to mix it up a little. A fine antique chair can be easily paired with a very contemporary parson style desk; a beautiful oriental rug can anchor a sectional sofa.
A room makeover can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to lead to insanity or bankruptcy. Color change, a few well chosen focal pieces, and a new furniture arrangement can change the entire look and feel of a room.
